Ensuring food safety
It is heartening to note that the authorities have issued strict directives to implement the provisions of the food safety Act. This will help check the alarming levels of poisonous/toxic items in food stuff.
The people of the State are dependent on vegetables from Tamil Nadu.
Organic vegetables are very scarce in the market. Restaurants and large-scale catering units depend on the local wholesale markets. The authorities should attach more personnel to the Food Safety Department to improve the checking system. More quality- control laboratories should be opened at various centres. The licences/permits of transport carriers/business establishments violating the rules should be cancelled.

Succour to the masses
The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation deserves praise for operating buses right up to the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC). These services are a real help to the public.
Similar services, linking all government hospitals with the city, must be introduced. Originating from the Peroorkada hospital, the services should be routed through the Mental Health Centre, the Thycaud hospital, and the General & Ophthalmic hospitals to terminate at the Pulayanarkotta health centre.

Cable trench travails
Recently, the byroad connecting Kulathara and Thaliyal, via Cherupazhanji temple, was dug up by the Kerala State Electricity Board for laying a 11-kV underground cable. After the work, the trench was filled up in a haphazard manner, leaving a heap of earth along the length of the trench. This is causing much inconvenience to the residents as cars cannot negotiate the stretch. Four-wheelers have stopped plying the road. The KSEB should take steps to repair the stretch.

Ill-conceived start
Though the academic year has started, textbooks are yet to be made available to the students. The government has failed to keep the promise that textbooks to all classes will be supplied before the opening of schools. The present situation is no different from the previous years.
Education, especially general education, is in a state of disorder. The lack of foresight and calculated effort is the main reason for this. The curriculum and textbook committees should prepare the manuscripts in a time-bound manner. The teachers are also in the dark as they are yet to get the handbooks.
