The Islamic fasting month of Ramzan began with the sighting of the new moon on Friday evening. Kazis across the State confirmed the sighting of the crescent at Kappad near Kozhikode. Among the Kazis who announced the beginning of Ramzan were Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, K. Alikutty Musliar, Syed Nasir Abdul Hayy Shihab Thangal, Mohammed Koya Thangal Jamalullaili, Syed O.P.M. Muthukoya Thangal, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari, and Syed Makhdoom M.P. Muthukoya Thangal.
Muslims in the State will join their brethren across the globe in observing dawn-to-dusk fasting for the next 30 days.
As Ramzan is their holiest month, they will engage in special prayers and keep away from many temporal activities.
They will increase charity and Koran recital, and hold special prayers like Tharaveeh at night. They generally suspend functions like marriages and receptions for a month. However, Iftar parties will enliven the social gatherings in Ramzan.
