MLA laid to rest with State honours at his native place Ala, near Chengannur

Chengannur MLA K.K. Ramachandran Nair, who passed away in Chennai on Sunday, was cremated with State honours at his native place Ala, near Chengannur, on Monday.

A large crowd of people, including party cadres and local residents, paid their final respects to the departed leader.

Earlier, the body was kept at the CPI(M) party office in Chengannur.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan; Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan; Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala; Ministers; Kodikunnil Suresh, MP; and various political party leaders paid their homage.

The CPI(M) leader, who was undergoing treatment for liver ailment at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, breathed his last on Sunday morning.

Born on December 1, 1952 at Ala, he contested twice from Chengannur to the Assembly.

In 2001, he was defeated by Shobana George of the Congress by a margin of 1,465 votes.

But in 2016 he wrested the the seat from the Congress by defeating incumbent P.C. Vishnunath by a margin of 7,983 votes.

Lover of arts

A lover of arts and music and a voracious reader, Mr. Nair was instrumental in reviving several waterbodies and streams in the region.

He completed MA in Economics from NSS College, Pandalam, and later pursued law from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.

He had served as president of the Chengannur Bar Council.

He is survived by his wife Ponnumani and son Prasanth.
