Rain fury continues in Thrissur, claims 13 more lives

The rain fury has claimed 13 lives in Thrissur district on Friday. Four persons are missing.

Though the intensity of rain has reduced, rivers such as Chalakudy, Manali, and Bharathapuzha are still overflowing. Chalakudy and Mala areas are the worst hit. Hundreds of people are stranded in houses. Flood water has even entered relief camps.

Six more bodies were recovered from the debris from a landslide site at Kuranchery, taking the death toll in the accident to 18. Four persons are still missing.

The body of one more person, Shaji, 40, was recovered from a landslip site at Pallam, near Deshamangalam, taking the number of deaths to three. One person is still missing.

Woman, son killed

A woman and son were killed when an uprooted tree fell over them while waiting for rescue operators on the top floor of their submerged house at Chalakudy. Deceased were Elya, 85, wife of Kannambuzha Ouseph, and son Anson, 44.

Sarath, 28, drowned at Gothuruth when he went to check the situation at his house from the relief camp. Radhakrishnan, 28, son of Chakyath Shivasankaran, died in a landslip at Mulloorkkara near Wadakkanchery.

An elderly man died of cardiac arrest while he was rescued from flooding at Pukkattukara. The deceased was identified as Edakkunny Ramachandran, 76. The body of a woman, who went missing in a water canal at Kizhakke Kallayi, was recovered. The deceased was identified as Leelamma, 64.

Fourteen houses were totally destroyed and 60 partially damaged in the rain in the district on Friday. Ministers A.C. Moideen and V.S. Sunil Kumar reviewed the rescue operations.

Traffic at Kuthiran on the Thrissur-Palakkad National Highway, which was disrupted for three days following landslips, has been partially resumed. A tanker lorry carrying cooking gas, which got trapped under the debris, was removed from the road on Friday evening.

One person from Thiruvananthapruam was killed when he got trapped under the mud and rocks during a landslip at Kuthiran on Thursday. More than 2,000 vehicles, mostly tanker lorries, have been trapped on both sides of the site of landslip for the past three days.

Train services from Thrissur to Thiruvananthapuram via Kottayam and to Palakkad through Shoranur have been cancelled till August 18 (Saturday) , according to Divisional Railway Manager, Thriruvananthapuram.

There is restriction on distribution of petrol and diesel from pumps in the district. The District Collector has asked pump operators to stop distribution of petrol and diesel to private vehicles till further information. This is to ensure fuel for vehicles used for rescue operations.

Thrissur Press Club donated ₹1 lakh to the relief fund. The amount was handed over to the District Collector T.V. Anupama by Press Club secretary M.V. Vineetha.
