The torrential rain in the past one week has been causing extensive damage to crop and property in the district. As many as 439 houses were damaged. Many trees were uprooted, disrupting road traffic and power supply.

Floodwaters inundated several residential areas in the district, forcing the district administration to shift nearly 450 persons of 80 families to relief camps.

As many as five relief camps have been opened at Cheeral, Karinhakunnu, Kottathara, and Panamaram in the district so far.

The rain affected 7,278 farmers in the district, official sources said. Crops, especially plantain and ginger, cultivated on 445.54 hectares were destroyed in the rain. A total loss of Rs.10.25 crore has been incurred in the rain-related calamities so far, the sources added.

Meanwhile, District Collector Kesavendrakumar has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including CBSE schools, anganwadis and professional colleges, in the district on Saturday.
