December 01, 2012 07:03 pm | Updated 07:18 pm IST - PALAKKAD:

A meeting of the District Development Committee (DDC) on Saturday urged the Centre to start the Kanjikode rail coach factory work, for which the foundation stone was laid nearly a year back.

Railways, which had taken over 231 acres at Kanjikode sanctioned by the State government for the factory, had only started construction of the compound wall.

The meeting, presided over by District Collector P.M. Ali Asgar Pasha, also called upon the Centre to start work on the IIT promised in the district.

A resolution moved by C.P. Mohammed, MLA, urged Railways to construct a triangular station at Shoranur so that trains from Thrissur could avoid the delay caused by shunting.

The meeting urged the government to constitute a Bharathapuzha protection authority to save the river from destruction due to sand-mining, encroachments on river bed, and pollution.

M. Hamsa, MLA, in another resolution, called upon the government to procure copra to save coconut farmers from the crash in prices of coconut.

M. Chandran, MLA, urged the government to clear the dues of Rs.73 crore to paddy farmers in the district, whose first crop was procured by the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation under the government’s paddy procurement scheme at Rs.17 a kg.
