‘Issue causes a lot of pain to Wayanad’

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in New Delhi on Tuesday to apprise him of the problems faced by the people of Wayanad due to the night traffic ban on the national highway passing through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka.

Mr. Gandhi, who represents Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, held a 20-minute discussion with Mr. Vijayan at Kerala House and later briefed reporters.

He said he had taken up the issue of night travel ban and youngsters protesting against it.

He also said the issue was causing lot of pain to Wayanad and Kerala.

‘Important matter’

“This is a very important matter and it needs to be tackled. The Chief Minister assured us that they are apprised of the situation and are trying to resolve it,” he said.

For seven days now, activists of various youth organisations are on a relay hunger strike. Farmers and local people, including women, in the area, took out a march to demand round-the-clock connectivity through the forest stretch of National Highway (NH) 766.

The movement of traffic between the Kerala-Karnataka border through the tiger reserve is banned from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to avoid any disturbance to wildlife.

Mr. Vijayan, however, had suggested that an elevated stretch through the core critical tiger habitat should be built instead of a complete ban.
