Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that Congress president Rahul Gandhi is a total failure as a Member of Parliament in Amethi the Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking after inaugurating a public meeting at Sulthan Bathery on Sunday in connection with the election campaign of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate in Wayanad Thushar Vellappally, she said Mr. Gandhi’s family had been ruling over the Amethi constituency for the past many years but they failed to bring in any development to that constituency.

Mr. Gandhi was claiming that he had set up an ordnance factory in his constituency in 2007 to provide jobs but it started functioning after the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ms. Sitharaman said.

Backward district

When Mr. Gandhi understood that he would be defeated in Amethi owing to his failure, he tried his luck in Wayanad, one of the 115 backward districts in the country selected by Mr. Modi for his Aspirational District Programme for all-round development, she said.

“Do you want an MP who failed to bring any development in his constituency for the past many years or an MP who will strengthen the hand of the Prime Minister? Do you want Wayanad to become a guinea pig in the hands of a failed MP?” Ms. Sitharaman said.

Terming the alliance of the CPI(M) and Congress in the parliamentary election as hypocrisy, she said they were fighting with each other in Kerala for power.

Attack on Thushar

On the attack against Mr. Vellappally at Kalikavu in Malappuram district two days ago, Ms. Sitharaman said the Congress and its ally IUML were scared of the huge public support for the NDA candidate. The massive support provoked them to attack Mr. Vellappally, Ms. Sitharaman added.
