In view of the seizure of a mobile phone and SIM card allegedly used by ‘Pulsar’ Suni, key accused in the assault and sexual abuse of a female actor, the district jail authorities in Kakkanad have launched a probe into the episode.

Official sources said a probe had been launched to ascertain the route through which the phone had been taken inside and whether Suni had actually used it while inside the jail. While preliminary investigations suggested that it was Vishnu, a jail mate of Suni, who had brought the phone inside, officials also suspect the involvement of a third person in the episode.

“We strongly suspect that the phone had been handed over to Suni, who had come to meet him at the interview room, which has got no metal detectors,” they said, adding that the entire prison complex had just one metal detector installed at its main entrance. The final report will also raise the need to install a metal detector in the door leading to the interview room to prevent outsiders handing over articles to inmates.

The district jail here has 48 CCTVs to track the movement of inmates, visitors and officials in the corridors and the entrance.

Officials had recovered the phone, allegedly used by Suni to call up Appunni, a close aide of actor Dileep, following the arrest of Vishnu and Sanal.
