While welcoming the Union government decision to include Kollam city on the list of Amrita cities, N.K. Premachandran, MP, wanted it to be included in the smart cities projects too.

In a statement here on Sunday, Mr. Premachandran said he had submitted a memorandum in this connection to Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Mr. Premachandran said that compared to the cities listed under the smart cities project, Kollam city was qualified enough to be included on it. If included, Kollam would be entitled to development activities to the tune of Rs.5 crore in the next five years.

He said he had communicated to Mr. Naidu that under the stipulated requirements for smart cities, Kollam was eligible

Though the State government had submitted a list of seven cities, including Kollam, to be included in the project, only one city from the State was included. He wanted Kollam to be included in the project this year itself.

Work inspection

In a separate statement, Mr. Premachandran said that he, along with an official team, would inspect the progress of construction on the Kollam bypass on Monday.

The inspection would begin from the Altharamood junction at Kavanad at 11 a.m. The aim of the inspection was to ensure that the work progressed at the desired pace so that it got over within the stipulated time.
