The police here provided protection to Prashanth Babu, former aide of Congress leader K. Sudhakaran, in view of the perceived threat to his life in the wake of his disclosure that the Congress leader had plotted to kill Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader E.P. Jayarajan.

The police said that Mr. Babu was provided two gunmen on Sunday following a directive from the government. Though Mr. Babu declined protection, the police would continue to ensure his security, the police said. Both Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Mr. Sudhakaran had separately demanded that Mr. Babu be given police protection.
