Communist Party of India (CPI) State unit secretary Pannian Ravindran has said that the politicisation of the alliance between the Nair Service Society (NSS) and the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam is dangerous.
Mr. Ravindran told presspersons here on Saturday that the NSS and the SNDP were organisations that had played significant roles in shaping society and their decision to work collectively was laudable. However, any attempts made to extend their influence and ambit of functioning to the political sphere did not auger well for the State. It was never advisable for community organisations to interfere in political matters. There must always be a ‘lakshman rekha’ that separated politics from the functioning of such organisations, and it should never be violated. It must not be forgotten that organisations were represented by political parties in the past and that corruption was the main factor that had led to the fall of the National Democratic Party (NDP), the erstwhile political wing of the NSS, which had a Ministerial berth in the State Cabinet, he said.
Apprehension
Mr. Ravindran expressed apprehension over the possible fallout of statements that pointed to a divide between the majority and the minority communities. “The United Democratic Front (UDF) must be held responsible for having led to the present scenario in which grievances concerning communal divides are voiced. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has never differentiated between its constituents on the lines of communities. Unlike at present, ministerial berths or appointments to key positions were divided among political parties and not communities or religious organisations,” the CPI State secretary said.
The reluctance of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to provide the fifth berth in the State Cabinet to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) had led to current situation, Mr. Ravindran said. The subsequent chain of events had given rise to the possibility of increase in extremist tendencies.
