Seven police officers of the Armed Reserve Camp, Kallekkad, surrendered before the Crime Branch Superintendent of Police here on Monday in connection with the death of an Adivasi civil police officer from Attappady.

Assistant sub-inspectors Rafeek and Hari Govind, and civil police officers Mahesh, Mohammed Azad, Sreejit, Visakh, and Jayesh reached the CBCID office here and surrendered before SP Bastin Sabu after the High Court rejected their application for anticipatory bail. IPC Section 306 for abetment of suicide, IPC Section 378 for theft, and clauses of SC/ST Atrocities Act were slapped on them. Adivasi civil police officer Kumar had reportedly committed suicide following mental torture by his colleagues at the Armed Reserve Camp, Kallekkad. His body was found on the railway tracks at Lakkidi, near Ottappalam, on July 25. Kumar’s wife had petitioned Chief Minister holding his colleagues responsible for his death.

All the seven officers had been suspended. S. Surendran, former deputy commandant of the AR Camp, had been arrested. A note reportedly left by Kumar had accused his senior colleagues, including Mr. Surendran, of harassing him mentally and physically. Mr. Surendran retired from service on July 31.

The police officers who surrendered on Monday were produced before a court here and remanded in judicial custody.
