Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday signalled a sea change in police functioning by declaring that station houses will henceforth work more as welcoming public service delivery centres.

Inaugurating nine police stations by videoconferencing from the capital, Mr Vijayan listed women help desks, cyber investigation units, security camera surveillance of police stations and lock-ups, and trained public relations officers at station houses as some of the initiatives his government had launched to give a more humane and civil-friendly direction to everyday law enforcement.

Plastic-free stations

He also stressed the need for police stations to be plastic-free and clean.

He asked SHOs to go by the government green protocol, including greening of station environment and judicious use of water and power.

The Chief Minister said his government had a positive impact on law enforcement, crime investigation, and protection of human rights.

Mr Vijayan also highlighted the government’s renewed focus on coastal security and its drive to protect seafaring fishers from the vagaries of weather and other accidents at sea.
