The police have registered a case against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State general secretary K. Surendran on charges of threatening two police officers with the intention of preventing them from discharging their duties.

The Kannur Town Police registered the case against Mr. Surendran under Sections 117-E (threatening to prevent a police officer from discharging his duties) and 120-O (causing nuisance through social media messages) on a complaint by P.P. Sadanandan and Prince Abraham, Dy.SPs of Kannur and Thalassery respectively.

The two police officers, whose questioning of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker Subeesh yielded the controversial confession of the latter to involvement of RSS workers in the Fazal murder case, lodged the complaint with the Town Police here against the BJP leader for allegedly threatening them in a Facebook post recently.

Alleging that both the officers scripted the confession 'drama,' Mr. Surendran in his Facebook post allegedly wrote that the officers should be mindful that after their retirement they are just ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Koothuparamba initiated proceedings on a complaint by Subeesh against Mr. Sadanandan and Mr. Abraham for his alleged illegal and wrongful confinement in police custody by them for extracting a confession under duress that he and other RSS workers had been involved in the murder of National Development Front (NDF) worker Muhammad Fazal at Thalassery on October 22, 2006.

The charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arraigned eight people, including Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders Karayi Rajan and Karayi Chandrashekharan.

In his complaint to the court on November 25, 2016, Subeesh said the two Dy.SPs had illegally and wrongfully confined him and tortured him to obtain his statement that the CPI(M) leaders arraigned in the Fazal murder case had no connection with the murder and to create false evidence in the case. Subeesh's advocate said the court had heard one of the witnesses to his being taken into custody near Vadakara at 9.30 p.m. on November 17, 2016.

Subeesh's complaint said that he was produced before the Mattannur magistrate at 9.30 p.m. on November 19 after his brother Ajesh had filed a private complaint to issue a search warrant to find Subeesh. The Koothuparamba court posted the hearing of other witnesses for July 15, the advocate said.

He also said that the court ordered the Kannur Central Prison authorities to produce documents concerning Subeesh's medical treatment during his custody period.
