The police have intensified probe with the support of the Cyber Cell into an incident in which a couple from Tamil Nadu was brutally attacked by a native at Ambalavayal in the district on Sunday night.

The incident came to light on Tuesday morning after visuals captured by locals went viral. The video showed the youth being brutally beaten up by one Sajeevanand of Kayattuthara at Payikkolly in the district with the mob watching the scene.

When the woman, claiming that she was the wife of the youth, questioned the accused, she too was allegedly beaten up.

However, the police are yet to nab the accused or identify the couple. “We have intensified investigation into the incident with the support of the Cyber Cell,” A.Venugopal, Sub Inspector of police, Ambalavayal, told The Hindu .

“The couple had rented a room in a homestay at Ambalavayal on Sunday noon and had left it by evening. The incident occurred after they left the homestay. The room was rented on behalf of one Suneer of Chadanakurusssi at Noorani in Palakkad,” he added.

Mr. Venugopal said that the police had constituted two squads to search for the accused and the victims. A police team will leave for Palakkad on Thursday in search of the couple, while another is trying to locate the hideout of the accused, he added.

Meanwhile, the accused filed an anticipatory bail petition in the District and Sessions Court here on Wednesday.

State Women’s Commission Chairperson M.C. Josephine registered a suo motu case on Tuesday in connection with the incident.
