The recent incidents of police atrocities appears to have given steam to the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) campaign against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The State government grapples with the sudden spate of controversies revolving around custodial death, the suicide of a non-resident investor and brutality in handling students agitating against the move to implement the M.A. Khader Commission report on school education reforms.

The UDF has put the government on the mat on these issues. As part of the Opposition coalition’s attempt to retain the initiative, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) announced that it would organise demonstrations on Friday in front of the Secretariat here and in front of collectorates in various districts in protest against the government’s attempts to protect the local political leadership which was allegedly responsible for the death NRI investor Sajan Parayil at Anthoor.

KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran, who announced the agitation programmes here, wanted the State government to register criminal cases against the Anthoor municipal chairperson and officials. He wanted the government to file murder charges against police officials involved in the death of financier and cheating suspect Rajkumar at Nedumkandam police station.

He said the KPCC political affairs committee will meet here on Sunday and give shape to the agitations to be organised. The KPCC had deputed a senior leader each to the districts to lead the agitation programme on Friday.
