: The carcass of a six-month-old elephant calf was found in a stream at Akamalavaram, near Malampuzha, on Monday evening.

The carcass, with no signs of wound marks, was found partially immersed in the stream.

The local people who spotted the carcass informed Forest officials.

Attempts by officials to burn the carcass without conducting autopsy led to strong protests from the people living in the region.

They alleged that the calf had died due to poisoning by pineapple farmers in the region.

The protesters contacted the department higher-ups following which senior officials and a veterinary doctor reached the spot by evening.

The autopsy was being delayed due to the presence of herds of wild elephants in the locality.

The veterinary expert said an earthmover was required to conduct the autopsy after retrieving the body from the stream.

The autopsy may be conducted on Tuesday morning. — Special Correspondent
