Plea to make couple declare assets at the time of marriage

Kerala State Women’s Commission member Noorbina Rasheed has called for legislation to make it mandatory for newly married couples to declare assets at the time of their marriage as disputes over property are a major cause of marital discord in the State.

She was speaking at a mega adalat of the commission here on Wednesday.

Ms. Rasheed said the proposal for the legislation had been taken up before the authorities. The commission had made the proposal in view of the extravagant spending for marriage ceremonies. She said there were cases of couples who got married in profligate wedding ceremonies deciding to separate after some time.

She said society had to discourage the tendency to display brides as “mobile jewellery shops” during marriage ceremonies. The commission had called for enactment of law seeking bar on a woman wearing gold ornaments exceeding 10 sovereigns, she said.

Ms. Rasheed said many families in the State would be relieved if wedding extravaganza was to disappear. The tendency to spend money began with printing invitation cards to inviting a large number of people. Wedding reception parties were now being entrusted with event management groups.

Pre-marriage counselling being conducted by the commission was yielding a good response, Ms. Rasheed said.
