Plantation workers intensify agitation

: The agitation launched by plantation workers in the district seeking a hike in wages is getting stronger with irate workers blockading roads and disrupting vehicular traffic in the hill tracts on Friday.

A large number of workers, the majority attached to Harrison Malayalam Plantation Limited, blockaded the Sabarimala road at Puthukkada, near Laha, demanding wage hike. P.K. Somarajan, CITU leader, inaugurated a march taken out under the aegis of the Joint Trade Union Action council at Laha. Malayalappuzha Jyothishkumar, INTUC State secretary; T.S. Saji, V.K. Vasudevan, P.S. Prasad, Pushpangadan, S.S. Suresh, and Mohanan, all trade union leaders, addressed the march.

The workers also launched a relay fast in front of the HML office at Laha on Friday.

The hill tracts of Kallely, Kalanjoor, and Kodumon too witnessed protest marches by plantation workers.

Workers attached to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh staged a march in Pathanamthitta town in the forenoon.
