Peringome tense after attacks

January 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - KANNUR:

Tension prevailed at Peringome and areas near Payyannur following incidents of bomb attacks and arson by workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The latest bomb attack on the house of a BJP functionary at Thavidissery, near Peringome, in the early hours of Tuesday worsened the situation.

A group alleged to be CPI(M) workers came in motorcycles and hurled bomb at the house at around 1.30 a.m. Windowpanes were smashed in the explosion.

This incident comes after the torching of the autorickshaw of another BJP functionary in the area on January 11 and the subsequent attack on the CPI(M) Peringome area committee office in the early hours on January 12.

The police said that security had been strengthened in the area following the incidents. Additional police force has been deployed at Peringome and Thavidissery, the police said.
