The vice president of Kolazhy gram panchayat, N.A. Sabu, threatened to kill himself on Monday in protest against drinking water shortage in the panchayat.

Mr. Sabu climbed up to the water tank, which was constructed eight years ago, with a rope and threatened to hang himself in protest against the inordinate delay in commissioning the tank.

“When people are suffering from severe drinking water shortage, the authorities are delaying the commissioning of the tank, which was built spending lakhs,” he said.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel and the police reached the spot. He withdrew the protest after the Water Resources Minister promised to commission the tank within 15 days.
