One athlete remains critical

The condition of one of the four sports students who had attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous fruit remained critical at Government T.D. Medical College Hospital here on Friday.

Hospital Superintendent Santhosh K. Raghavan said that with the poison affecting her heart, she had been put on pacemaker.

A trainee had died early Thursday. The other two trainees were stable and kept under observation.

Meanwhile, Sports Authority of India (SAI) Director-General Injeti Srinivas visited the families of the patients at the hospital on Friday. He, along with SAI Kerala Regional Director G. Kishore, also visited the house of the girl who died.

SAI officials and the heads of the departments concerned at the hospital held a teleconference with the medical board at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Mr. Srinivas said the team at AIIMS was fully satisfied with the facilities at the hospital, and the medical treatment being provided. Mr. Srinivas told The Hindu that the SAI had handed over Rs.5 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs.25,000 each to the families of the three patients as financial assistances. The SAI had also offered a job to the mother of the deceased on contractual basis.

AIDWA demand

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has called for a mechanism to constantly monitor the functioning of sports schools and hostels.
