Nuns adamant on staying at Kuravilangadu home

Reject letter that seeks to enforce their transfer orders

Further deepening the confusion over their transfer out of Kerala, the five nuns who had been part of a public protest against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun, on Sunday affirmed that they would not accept the letter that seeks to annul the stay on their transfer orders.

The letter was issued by Fr. Peter Kavumpuram, who claims to be the public relations officer of the Jalandhar diocese.

Talking to the media here, sister Anupama Kelamangalathuveliyil, one of the nuns who has been issued the order, said Bishop Agnelo Rufino Gracias as the Apostolic Administrator of the diocese had already issued a directive to withhold their transfer orders.

“We strongly suspect the intervention of Bishop Franco behind this latest development. Come whatever may, we are going to remain at the St.Francis Mission in Kuravilangadu till the case is over,” she said.

Holding that they were yet to contact the administrator of the Missionaries of Jesus (MJ) Congregation, she also pointed out that while the Mother General could take decisions on administrative matters of the congregation, the Bishop held the authority to approve the same.

“If the church authority as well as the State government desert us, we have no other place to go. We are hopeful of the State coming to our rescue in times of distress,” she added.

The other day, Bishop Agnelo Gracias directed the MJ congregation to withhold the transfer orders of these nuns till the case was over and not to issue any letter to the five nuns without his permission.

Saturday’s order

Things, however, took another turn late on Saturday with Fr. Peter Kavumpuram clarifying that the transfer orders had not been revoked. “The Apostolic Administrator has not interfered in the internal affairs of this Congregation (MJ), therefore the order to return to their rightful communities by the Mother General is not cancelled, but stands,” he said in a statement.
