No Tobacco Day to be observed

May 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - KALPETTA:

The district Health Department will raise a human wall at Sulthan Bathery in the district at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday to mark World No Tobacco Day.

The programme is aimed at sensitising the public on the social and health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption, District Medical Officer P.V. Sasidharan said in a release here. Though the habit of tobacco smoking has decreased considerably among the youths, the habit of using other tobacco products such as panmasala and gutka has gone up considerably among them.

Though the trade of such tobacco products had been banned in the State, the government was yet to stop the illicit trade of tobacco products, Dr. Sasidharan said.
