P.K. Kunhalikutty says the Congress, IUML, and the CPI(M) are opposing fascist forces on their own.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has distanced from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in taking on fascist forces. IUML national treasurer and Industry Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty said here on Saturday that the party maintained no sympathy or favour towards the CPI(M).

Addressing newspersons at the Press Club here, Mr. Kunhalikutty said that the positive remarks made by CPI(M) Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan about the Muslim League did not mean that both parties were getting closer.

“The Congress, the IUML and the CPI(M) are all opposing fascist forces on their own. There is no need for the Muslim League to join hands with the CPI(M) to do that,” he said.

He said only the Congress could lead a secular alliance against fascist forces in the country.

Mr. Kunhalikutty said that the presence of the Muslim League had helped maintain communal harmony in Kerala society. “We have restricted the growth of communal organisations,” he said, adding that the State had several political parties with communal hues working among minority and majority communities. Mr. Kunhalikutty said that the IUML kept silent about the SNDP’s political entry because it did not want to create an issue. The party, he said, had a clear stand in the issue and would begin a campaign against communal polarisation after the local body elections.
