New political equations a decisive factor in Alappuzha

The arrival of a new avatar of the NDA into the battle of ballots has added a fresh dimension to the fight for power in Alappuzha district panchayat. The impact of the renewed political equations could be key to a tilt in the balance of power in the district. The LDF had retained power in the 2010 elections, winning 13 out of the 23 divisions. The new association between the BJP and the SNDP is posing challenge to the LDF more than any anti-incumbency factor that works generally against a party in power. The district panchayat led by U. Pratibhahari had introduced several novel projects for the welfare of women, children, and the deprived. The LDF is banking on the ‘feel good’ factor generated in the panchayat even as its leaders go on explaining the need to elect the Left to ward off the rightist forces, accused of communalism.Nevertheless, the leaders of SNDP and BJP have not been able to work out a deal across the district. In fact, the understanding between the two entities remains only at selected areas.

The NDA has fielded candidates in all but one division. Its candidate in Kuttanad belongs to Samathva Munnani, the organisation floated by the SNDP activists, with the support of BJP. The NDA-supported Independent candidate in Mannar division is a former UDF leader. The dissatisfaction among the local leadership of constituent parties remains a matter of concern both for the LDF and UDF. The Congress has suspended several of its leaders for anti-party activities, including a few prominent ones in the local political spectrum.

The Rajan Babu faction of the JSS too is unhappy with the seat-sharing formula adopted by the UDF.The situation is not different in the LDF camp as well. The CPI and CPI(M) had quarrels over seat allocation. But the LDF leaders affirm that such odd instances will have negligible impact on the outcome of the elections.
