Muthalamada rejoices as ban goes

January 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:22 am IST - Muthalamada (Palakkad):

The decision of the European Union to lift the seven-month-old ban on Indian mangoes has come as a major relief for Muthalamada, the biggest centre of mango production in the country.

In the international market, Muthalamada mangoes are the early birds as they reach the market much before the mangoes ripen in the gardens of the competitors in Peru and Venezuela.

Muthalamada exports mangoes worth Rs.200 crore annually, and the decision to lift the ban comes hardly a week ahead of the beginning of this year’s mango season. Compared with other mango hubs in the country, harvesting begins first in Muthalamada, by January last week every year and the season continues till July end.
