Move to ensure houses for all landless tribal families

The Wayanad district administration has decided to accord first preference to ensuring houses for all landless tribal families while executing the tribal rehabilitation project in the district.

The decision was taken after it was found that a majority of landless tribal families were yet to occupy the land assigned to them. The district administration had disbursed 450 acres of land to 655 landless tribal families in Wayanad recently. But only 50 families had occupied the land, said District Collector A.R. Ajayakumar.

Hence, the administration was planning to retrieve the unoccupied land and disburse it among deserving landless families, he said. Ten cents would be given to each family in the next phase of the project, he added.

The final decision in this regard will be taken at a meeting to be chaired by the Revenue Minister on August 8. Prior to it, a meeting of MLAs and presidents of local bodies would be convened, he said.
