The State will go for more rubberised roads to increase the use of natural rubber in the State, Minister for Public Works K. Sudhakaran has said.
Inaugurating the modernised office of the Aymanam grama panchayat and declaring its ISO certification on Saturday, Mr. Sudhakaran said discovery that waste plastic could be used to reinforce asphalting of roads had given a new impetus to road development in the State.
The Minister also said that along with these two new options, the PWD had also decided to use coir Bhuvastra for strengthening the roads.
“These steps would go a long way in fighting the menace of plastic waste in the State and also strengthening the sagging fortunes for the traditional industries such as coir,” Mr. Sudhakaran said.
Focus on mechanisation
He said the department was in the process of mechanisation to speed up road development and maintenance works.
“It has been decided to use imported German technology and machinery to this end,” he added.
Taking stock of the past one year of the LDF government, he said the government could do a lot to support Malayalam language and also the agriculture sector. K. Suresh Kurup, MLA, presided. Vaikom Viswan, V.N. Vasavan ( both former MLAs) and others spoke on the occasion.
