Jambuli Biju, 35, an accused in two rape cases and several other molestation attempts, was arrested by the Railway Police here on Saturday. The Kollam native was caught on the charge of attempted molestation of a woman, 23, on Parasuram Express. The woman was travelling to Thiruvananthapuram from Kannur along with her father.

The accused was nabbed by passengers and handed over to the police at the Kozhikode station. He was assaulted by infuriated passengers and suffered injuries on his head and face.

The police said the incident took place when the train reached Vadakara station at 7.45 a.m.

The accused tried to escape when the woman raised an alarm, but the passengers nabbed him.

The police said the accused later allegedly tried to molest a woman doctor on duty at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital where he was taken for medical examination.

Separate case

Acting on the doctor’s complaint, the police slapped a separate case against him.

“We took him to the Medical College Hospital as the Beach Hospital authorities were apprehensive of his health condition after the manhandling attempt,” said P. Muraleedharan, Sub-Inspector at the Kozhikode Railway Police station.

Mr. Muraleedharan said the accused had a strange criminal background which would be investigated further after getting him in police custody. During interrogation, the police also found that Biju was involved in a case of attempted molestation of a homemaker at Anchal on May 3. In the attempt, he had suffered injuries on his lip, which helped the police identify him easily.

He was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-1 and remanded till June 21.
