Mineral sand-mining: MP flays privatisation attempt

The State government move to open mineral sand-mining to private players smacks of corruption, N.K. Premachandran, MP, has said.

Mr. Premachandran told reporters here on Monday that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan should clarify whether the move initiated by Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan was in line with the Left Democratic Front policy. The Centre had framed a rule saying that mineral sand-mining should not be opened to private sector.

Now the Industries Minister was trying to overcome the hurdle by citing a court verdict with the connivance of the CPI(M), he said.

‘Clear air’

The CPI(M) that was constantly agitating against privatisation should clear the air on the issue.

It was the strong opposition of the Industries Director that exposed the move and the file had to be routed to the Law Department for opinion.

Mr. Jayarajan would not have taken a decision on his own without the knowledge of Mr. Vijayan and the CPI(M) leadership.

If Mr. Jayarajan had acted on his own, Mr. Vijayan and the party should take action against the Minister for violating the LDF policy, he said.
