Mahatma Gandhi University will confer honorary doctorates on prominent personalities from various walks of life on November 20.
The syndicate of the university on Tuesday decided to confer DLitt on N. Ram, Chairman, Kasturi and Sons Limited; C.N.R. Rao, Chairman, Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister; artist A. Ramachandran, and the late musician V. Dakshinamoorthy (posthumously).
Five syndicate members, including Congress MLA Benny Behanan, urged Vice Chancellor A.V. George, who chaired the meeting, to confer DLitt on K. Karunakaran posthumously. They reasoned that a decision in this regard was taken by the syndicate ten years ago and that any further delay in conferring the honour on the late Chief Minister would be a disrespect to the leader who was instrumental in establishing the university. However, the Vice Chancellor expressed his inability in taking a favourable decision, drawing protests from the syndicate members.
It was decided to approach the State government for concurrence in establishing a School of Arabic Language and a School of Mathematics.
The syndicate decided to convert the mode of examinations for postgraduate programmes conducted by the School of Indian Legal Thought and the School of Computer Sciences to online. The move comes in the wake of a successful trial run conducted by the School of Computer Sciences.
The Syndicate decided to sanction Rs.50 lakh for providing fellowship to research students. It was also decided to award doctorates to nine scholars.
