‘Varsity shedding its key responsibility’

A decision by the examination wing of the Mahatma Gandhi university to shift its responsibility of registration of candidates for various examinations to the affiliated colleges has triggered confusion and invited criticism from the stakeholders.

The registration work has to be now undertaken at each affiliated college instead of the earlier system, where the process was done by the officials at the examination wing of the university.

The new decision will come in to effect from this academic year.

Confirming the development, N. Jayakumar, Syndicate member and convener of the committee on examination affairs, said that the registration for examination of the first year undergraduate students have to be done online by the college authorities concerned from this academic year. “It is part of the varsity move to make its main offices paperless. The college authorities need not come all the way to the main campus carrying the exam registration form. They can upload the details on the official website. But the fee receipt had to be forwarded to the university,” he said.

Stating that the move will erode the confidentiality and secrecy of the examinations, Rajan Varughese, former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university, said that the confidential nature of university examination starts with registration of candidates for various examinations.

“The affiliated colleges can now enroll ineligible candidates for the examination which can be detected only after the conduct of examination. Interestingly, the decision to entrust the colleges to upload the exam registration details was not taken by the Syndicate,” he said.

A Principal of a city college said that his administrative staff had already opposed taking up the additional work, which was done at the university examination wing for the last several years. Curiously, the university is collecting the money for the exam registration in advance and now shedding its duties by asking the colleges to upload it online. This will increase the burden on the affiliated colleges, he said.

The decision will come into effect from this academic year.
