Various measures are planned to check the spread of infectious fever as the number of fever cases in the district has been on the increase since the onset of monsoon.

Health Department officials say that they are on high alert as the number of cases of fever reported in various hospitals in the district crossed 82,000.

They, however, say that the number is lower compared to the cases in other districts. The out-patient (OP) time at all government hospitals has been extended till 3 p.m. in view of the increase in fever cases, they informed.

A meeting of Health Department officials here convened by District Collector P. Bala Kiran on June 22 to chalk out the measures to control the spread of viral fever in the district decided to strengthen measures for vector control and hygiene and health awareness activities.

Deputy District Medical Officer M.K. Shaj informed that in-patient wing has been started at the Peringome Taluk Hospital.

All steps were under way to ensure availability of medicine and service of doctors in the hospitals, he assured. Of the vacancies of 32 assistant surgeons in the district, 25 have been filled, he said adding that they were appointed on a contract basis for six months.

Large number of fever cases have been reported from Cheurpuzha, Alakkode, Peringome and Aralam. Of the 186 suspected cases of Dengue fever, 37 cases were confirmed, the officials said. Also reported were 46 cases of malaria, mostly among migrant workers.

In malaria cases, family members of the infected people were also being examined. Special Health squads would monitor areas where malaria cases were reported, they said.

The District Collector informed that ‘dry day’ would be observed in the district on June 28 and July 5.

Local bodies, government departments and the public should co-operate with the ‘dry day’ initiatives, he said. School authorities should take steps to ensure hygiene in the areas in and around their schools, he said.

Many schools in the district are reported to be breeding centres of mosquitoes, he said.
