A 42-year-old person was killed after he tried to interfere in a quarrel between a couple at Vayalar, near Cherthala, on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Jayan of Mukkudikkal. The Cherthala police said they had arrested Sumesh, 36, of Olivakkathe Veli Veettil, Cherthala South grama panchayat, in connection with the murder.

According to the police, the accused had quarrelled with his wife Sasikala, who informed their neighbour Jayan. When Jayan reached the spot, Sumesh attacked him. “Sumesh was an accused in theft cases. He reached his rented house after midnight and picked up a quarrel with his wife. When Jayan tried to interfere he attacked him. Jayan suffered serious injuries and was declared brought dead at the taluk hospital,” said an official. The incident took place at 1.30 a.m.
