Mani appears before SIT

Ending two days of suspense, former CPI(M) Idukki district secretary M M Mani, whose controversial speech on political murders in the district sparked a controversy, appeared before the investigating officer in Thodupuzha on Wednesday for questioning in connection with the murder cases of 1980s.

Mr Mani arrived at the DySP office in the morning after a second notice was issued to him by the Special Investigating Team (SIT) on Saturday.

Mr Mani was accompanied by CPI(M) district secretary K.K.Jayachandran MLA, and S.Rajendran MLA. He said the speculation that he was absconding was wrong. He also said he will fully co-operate with the investigation.

The Special Investigation Team wanted to elicit crucial information from Mr Mani on the political murders since 1980s in addition to the three murders referred by Mr Mani in his speech. He was questioned in-camera by the investigation team.

The officers interrogated him for nearly five hours. He was allowed to go by 3 pm.

Speculation was ripe that Mr Mani spent two days at the CPI(M) area committee office in Munnar and the police had said that he would be arrested if he failed to appear before the investigating officers at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
