Man United fandom takes centre stage at wedding

Malappuram native decorates house in club colours

A hardcore fan of English football club Manchester United in Malappuram made his wedding day memorable by decorating his house and bedroom with flags and emblems, and in colours of his favourite club.

O. Riyas from Thottumukkam near Areekode caught the attention of the local media by surprising the invitees at his wedding reception with the crest and colours of Manchester United. However, the bride Mufeeda was not surprised. She said she was aware of Mr. Riyas’s football craze and had expected more.

A former under-17 Kerala player, Mr. Riyas painted the ceiling of his bedroom with a Manchester United banner describing the team as the most complete team in world football. The bedspread and pillows were in red, with the names of the bride and the groom written in white below the yellow badge of the club. A jersey in red and white with the names of Riyas and Mufeeda written on it hung on the wall behind the cot. His wardrobe too sported the Manchester United badge.

While some guests mumbled about the setting of the bedroom, some praised him for the honest display of his passion. Mr. Riyas and his friends took part in the reception, wearing the home jersey and away jersey of the club. While his name was printed on the home jersey, the bride’s name appeared on the away jersey. The jerseys sported the number 27, as his wedding took place on July 27.

Despite his affiliation to Manchester United, Mr. Riyas loves Argentine legend Lionel Messi. His friends had stopped him from putting up a picture of Messi, the superstar of Barcelona Football Club, in the bedroom.

Mr. Riyas works in Kuwait and plays football in the Kuwait Malayali Football League there. He is an active member of the Malappuram Brothers team.
