: A team of forest officials led by P. Ranjith, Forest Range Officer, Chethalayath Forest Range under the South Wayanad Forest Division, arrested a man in connection with hunting a wild tusker at Amarakkuni, near Pulpally, on Monday morning.

The arrested was identified as C.Satheesh, 44, of Pulikkal at Amarakuni in the district.

During interrogation, the accused admitted that he killed the tusker, aged around 15 years, with a country-made rifle near his house at 2.30 a.m. on June 6 , Mr. Ranjith told The Hindu .

Satheesh’s house is located on the fringes of the Kurichyat range of forest that comes under Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. He said that he shot the tusker when it entered his plantation. The pellets hit the skull of the tusker and it succumbed to the injury nearly 160 metres away from the site, Mr. Ranjith said. After the incident, he hid the country-made rifle in a gully near his house.
