Malls, cinemas not to levy parking fees

May 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - KOLLAM:

The Kollam Corporation will initiate strong action against the managements of shopping malls and cinemas charging vehicle parking fee from customers.

Deputy Mayor M. Noushad informed a Corporation council meeting on Thursday that following many complaints, notice had been issued to malls and cinemas charging such fee.

For charging parking fee, a licence from the Corporation was required.

He said that when shopping malls were constructed, a specific area had to be earmarked for parking. No fee could be levied for parking of vehicles on that premises.

Fee could be levied for taking care of parked vehicles. But malls and cinemas were not providing this facility.

It was G. Lalu, a Communist Party of India (CPI) member of the council, who raised the issue in the House.

Mr. Lalu said that cinemas were fleecing moviegoers under the guise of collecting parking fees.
