Heavy rain, which resumed late Monday, caused widespread destruction in Palakkad district on Tuesday apart from throwing normal life out of gear. Most parts of Palakkad town and surrounding grama panchayats were inundated as the shutters of the Malampuzha dam were opened up to 60 cm in different phases since Tuesday morning.

Apart from Malampuzha, shutters of the Chulliyar and Walayar dams have been opened. harathapuzha’s tributaries Mangalam, Ayiloor, Gayathri, Mokkai, Kalpathy and Walayar are in spate. There is heavy flow of water in the otherwise dry Bharathapuzha. In Attappady, the east flowing Bhavani is in spate as Tamil Nadu has raised the shutters of the Upper Bhavani dam in the Nilgiris.

Road traffic on the Sekharipuram bypass connecting Kozhikode and Coimbatore with Palakkad came to a standstill on Tuesday after the water released from the Malampuzha dam started flowing to the town area. Traffic on the Palakkad-Malampuzha route also remained paralysed.
