Mahila Sangom demands safety of women train passengers

The President of Kerala Mahila Sangom, state unit of National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), Meenakshi Thampan has demanded the railways “to provide armed security to ladies coaches to ensure protection of women rail passengers in the State.”

Inaugurating a protest march organized by the Mahila Sangom in front of Palakkad Railway Junction here on Wednesday she said that “the women passengers are facing harassment by both the railway employees and by anti-social elements as some of the recent incidents of harassment of women travelers showed.”

Prof. Thampan has alleged that the Railway authorities “are neglecting the safety of women passengers and reluctant to provide better amenities to passengers.”

She demanded that “the ladies compartments should be attached in the middle of the train and during night it should be provided with armed police security.”

She also demanded more ladies compartments in trains as lakhs of women are using this mode of transport every day in the State.

The meeting was presided over by Mahaila Sangom state secretary Kamala Sadanandan.
