The Nair Service Society (NSS) has taken a critical stance on the ongoing discussion regarding the entry of non-Hindus into temples.
In a statement here on Friday, NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair said one could not understand why such a discussion was initiated at all, at this point.
Whether non-Hindus would deem the deity at the temples as god was doubtful. For them it could be a piece of wood or stone. However, for the Hindus, the deity was the symbol of the gods and goddesses responsible for the birth, governance, and demise of all things in the universe.
The adoration of the deities entailed special rituals to ensure physical and mental cleanliness. As such the temple, deity, and those who entered the temple were bound by unique practices, he said.
Mr. Nair pointed out that those who believed in other faiths did not allow those who believed in other religions into their places of worship. “As such let the Hindu temples remain as places of worship for the Hindus,” the NSS general secretary said.
He, however, pointed out that the case of Sabarimala Dharma Sastha Temple was different. Those belonging to all faiths were allowed at the hill temple. As per the tradition, it was believed that only those who had completed 41 days of abstinence could entre the temple.
