The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has consolidated its position in Alappuzha with the election of eight out of nine of its candidates. It wrested Chengannur from the United Democratic Front (UDF), leaving only one seat to the latter in the district.

The lone seat that the UDF won was Haripad where Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala romped home with a majority of 18,621 votes, more than thrice the margin he had got in the 2011 elections. He defeated P. Prasad of the Communist Party of India (CPI).

The LDF had fielded sitting MLAs in six constituencies. The winning margin went up in all seats except Kuttanad and Cherthala. In Kuttanad, Thomas Chandy of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) got re-elected, with a lower margin of 4,891, compared to 7,971 of 2011. He was facing a three-corned battle with Jacob Abraham of Kerala Congress (M) and Subhash Vasu of the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena.

In Cherthala, P. Thilothaman of the CPI won the electoral race again, but with a lower margin of 7,196, in comparison to 18315 of 2011. He defeated P. Sarath of Congress.

A.M. Ariff, LDF candidate and sitting MLA of Aroor, improved his majority by more than double. He defeated C.R. Jayaprakash of the Congress with a majority of 38,519 votes, the largest in the district. His victory margin was 16,852 in 2011.

Former Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, the LDF candidate in the Alappuzha constituency, was re-elected, with a higher margin. His margin went up to 31,032 from 16,342 in 2011. He defeated Laly Vincent of Congress.

The victory margin of G. Sudhakaran, sitting MLA and LDF candidate of Ambalappuzha, went up to 22,621 from 16,580 of 2011. He defeated Shaik P. Harriz of the Janata Dal (United).

In Mavelikara, R. Rajesh, sitting MLA, won with a margin of 31,542, up from 5,149 of 2011. He was engaged in a three-cornered fight with Baiju Kalasala of the Congress and P.M. Velayudhan of the BJP. In Kayamkulam, U. Pratibha Hari, the LDF contestant and former Alappuzha district panchayat president, won with a margin of 11,857 votes, defeating M. Liju of Congress. She had replaced the sitting MLA, C.K. Sadasivan, who had won the seat in 2011 with a slender margin of 1315 votes.

LDF candidate in Chengannur K.K. Ramachandran Nair won with a margin of 7,983 votes, defeating P.C. Vishnunath of Congress, the sitting MLA. A three-cornered contest had taken place here with the BJP having had fielded P.S. Sreedharan Pillai.
