he Left Democratic Front (LDF) has kicked off its ward conventions for the upcoming local body elections in the city Corporation. The first phase of ward visits of the candidates has also been completed.
Meanwhile, Mujeeb Rahman, the State executive member of the Janata Dal (United) and the current Deputy Opposition Leader in the City Corporation, has decided to leave the UDF and join the LDF along with his party workers.
He had on Sunday decided to stand as an Independent candidate after he was denied the Kamaleswaram ward which he had asked for. He will now contest as the LDF candidate from the same ward.
As many as 150 JD(U) workers have decided to join the LDF in protest ‘against the neglect they had to face as part of the UDF’. Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary Kadakampally Surendran lauded the decision of Mr. Rahman and his party workers.
The LDF’s conventions were launched at Pangode, the ward from where LDF’s prospective mayoral candidate C. Jayan Babu is contesting. CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan inaugurated the convention. Mr. Jayan Babu first became Mayor of the city Corporation in 1988.
CPI (M) State committee member V. Sivankutty, MLA, inaugurated the LDF convention at Cheruvakkal, from where the current Works Standing Committee Chairperson V.S. Padmakumar is contesting.
Mr. Sivankutty also inaugurated the conventions at Pappanamcode, Ulloor, Ponnumangalam and Poojappura.
CPI (M) State Committee member M. Vijayakumar inaugurated the conventions at Mannathala and Pathirappally wards. Mayor K. Chandrika inaugurated the convention at Valiyasala ward.
Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the LDF convention at Karikkakom ward. CPI leader C. Divakaran, MLA, inaugurated the convention at PTP Nagar.
