The State government has cheated devotees and it will be reflected in the byelection to the Aroor Assembly constituency, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala has said.

He was addressing an election meeting of United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Shanimol Usman in the Aroor Assembly constituency on Monday.

“The government has cheated the believers. The Aroor bypoll outcome is going to be a verdict against the State government. The UDF will take a pro-devotee stance, if elected to power in the 2021 Assembly polls,” the Leader of the Opposition said.

‘Betrayed communists’

Meanwhile, addressing an election meeting at Chavadi in the Aroor Assembly seat, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Mullappally Ramachandran said that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] had betrayed communists by giving ticket to Manu C. Pulickal.

Mr. Ramachandran urged the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to clarify whether the family of Mr. Pulickal had supported the soldiers of Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Aiyar, who led the police firing that killed hundreds of poor people and farmers at Vayalar.

He said that the people of the State had lost faith in the LDF government. “The government is engaged in corruption and nepotism. The LDF will suffer badly in the byelections to the five Assembly constituencies in the State,” he added.

Mr. Ramachandran said that the CPI(M) had brought criminals from different parts of the State to Aroor.

“They are threatening UDF workers in Aroor and destroying our campaign materials,” he added.

Besides Ms. Usman, LDF’s Manu C. Pulickal of the CPI(M) and National Democratic Alliance’s K.P. Prakash Babu of the BJP are the main candidates in the fray.
