LDF candidates line up for poll battle

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Sunday released its list of candidates in 71 divisions in the Kochi Corporation at Jana Sabha, a people’s session convened to finalise its poll manifesto. The Front is waiting for its political rivals to announce their candidates to finalise its nominees in remaining three seats.

Inaugurating the Jana Sabha, where experts from select sectors, including IT and urban waste management, presented their views on the development route the city has to take, T.M. Thomas Isaac, MLA, said, if the LDF returned to power, it would focus on good governance marked by corruption-free and effective administration and people’s participation.

It was the LDF government that released Rs.100 crore for purchasing land at Brahmapuram and cleared the proposals for five flyovers in the city considering the possible traffic snarls the construction of the metro rail project would create. If elected to power, the Front would come up with a futuristic vision and approach for the city, he said.

Mr. Isaac alleged that the United Democratic Front (UDF) government had sabotaged the development models, including the people’s plan programme.

There were attempts to create communal divide in society. Kerala, which has secular tradition and politics, should reject the moves of some sections to gain a foothold in the State by aligning with communal and caste organisations, he said.

The LDF had obtained numerous suggestions from the general public through drop-boxes set up in different parts of the city. The front leaders had also personally met leaders of various organisations and communities to elicit their views. These suggestions would also be incorporated in the election manifesto, LDF leaders said.

The candidates were also presented before the Jana Sabha, which approved the draft manifesto.
