Large number of devotees throng Sabarimala

The Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala witnessed moderate rush as a large number of devotees thronged the holy hillock on Thursday evening to worship the deity on the first day of the Malayalam month on Friday.

The temple was opened on Thursday evening for the five-day monthly rituals in the Malayalam month of Thulam that begins on Friday.

Pilgrims from different parts of South India undertook the holy trek to the forest shrine, braving heavy rains in the forests.

Melsanthi

The Melsanthi, V.N.Vasudevan Namboodiri, opened the sanctum sanctorum at 5 p.m in the presence of the Tantri Kandararu Maheswararu Mohanararu, and the Travancore Devaswom Board president, A.Padmakumar.

A.K.Sudheer Namboodiri and M.S.Parameswaran Namboodiri, new head priests (Melsanthi) for the Ayyappa Temple and Maikappuram Devi Temple Temple respectively, too undertook the pilgrimage on Thursday.

Carrying the sacred bundle, Irunudikkettu, on the head, they offered prayers at the Ayyappa shrine.

Both the melsanthis will assume charge at a ceremonial installation to be held at the respective temple sopanam on November 16 evening.

Therituals will begin with the Tantri (chief priest), Kandararu Maheswararu Mohanararu, performing the auspicious Ashtadravya Ganapati homom on Friday morning.
