Even though Mr. Iyer did not deliver a speech owing to his health conditions, he thanked all the people for their continuing love, care and affection.

Ailments could not dampen the spirit of former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer as he joined his well-wishers to cut a cake here on Saturday on the occasion of his 100 birthday celebrations.

People from various walks of life recalled Mr. Iyer’s multi-faceted roles as an eminent jurist, legislator, and a human rights crusader, at the event organised by the People’s Council for Social Justice (PCSJ) at T.D.M. Hall.

Even though Mr. Iyer did not deliver a speech owing to his health conditions, he thanked all the people for their continuing love, care and affection.

N.R. Madhava Menon, eminent legal educationist, delivered the keynote address. Rose Varghese, Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, was the guest of honour. K. John Mathew, former judge of the Kerala High Court, and president of the People’s Council for Social Justice, presided over the function.

The PCSJ launched a year-long project to stop violence against women and children as part of the 100th birthday celebrations of Mr. Iyer.

Representatives of the council said that POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) clubs would be formed in schools.

Awareness programmes on domestic violence, seminars on mental health and family counselling initiatives will also be held in the coming days.

The event was held in association with the Ernakulam Karayogam and Federal Bank.
