Kochi firing incident: Gunmen still at large

Three weeks after the firing incident at a building at Panampilly Nagar, the two unidentified gunmen continue to be at large.

The two motorcycle-bound unidentified men had fired the shot allegedly targeting the beauty parlour of actor-businesswoman Leena Maria Paul on December 15.

Not proved

Though it has not been scientifically proved, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police P.P. Shams has more or less confirmed that the Mumbai underworld don, whose name has been heavily linked to the incident, was the one who gave extortion calls to Ms. Paul in the days leading up to the incident.

Internet calls

Ms. Paul had been receiving internet calls demanding ₹25 crore from the ‘don’ whose name was left behind by the unidentified men.

With the ‘don’ who is reportedly abroad, beyond their reach, the SIT continues to focus on nabbing the gunmen.

Though the SIT has been to Bangalore and Mangalore in their hunt, it is not yet clear whether the team has received any decisive leads.

The police had recovered a 0.22-calibre pellet from the crime scene a day after the incident and had almost confirmed that it was fired using a country-made air pistol. However, that theory could only be confirmed with the ballistic report.

In between, Ms. Paul, whose statement the police had taken, had accused police of not taking necessary precautionary measures despite having prior knowledge about the possibility of such a firing incident.

Though she had approached the High Court demanding police protection, her plea was turned down though she was permitted to hire private security guards.
